“Why buy flowers when they die in a matter of days? What's the point…?”Just like any living thing flowers are ephemeral in nature. From the moment they are cut from their plant they begin to die. The short life span of flowers helps us to be grounded in the present and admire the moment. Humans have used flowers all throughout history in ceremonies and celebrations. As humans its in our nature to seek beauty from art, music, architecture and flowers. The reason is so simple, viewing beautiful things for pleasure makes us happy by releasing dopamine and serotonin! The act of gifting flowers releases oxytocin. The true value is in our physical connection with nature and the way it make us feel to give and receive beauty.
Flower Care Guide1 Temperatures and Placement Keep your arrangement in a cool area of your home, away from direct sunlight. Avoid using heaters near them. Don’t place your flowers under a fan or in a windy spot. Keep them away from fruit bowls or candles, as the ethylene gases they release can make flowers wilt and expire faster.
2 Water Requirements Flowers need to be kept in fresh clean water. Your vase should be clean, and water should be filled to just below the tie point on your bouquet. Refreshing the water in your vase every 2-3 days will help your flowers immensely, bacteria is the enemy.
If you've received a vase arrangement simply place the vase under the tap with a gentle stream let the vase overflow to flush out the old water, then tip excess and place.
3 Retrimming Stems When you have received your bouquet unwrap and give your stems a fresh trim on an angle them immediately place into your vase. This should be done along with water changes.
4 Remove Wilting Stems As your arrangement ages, it's completely normal for some flowers to wilt before others. Remove these stems as soon as they start to die to keep the water clean and ensure the rest of your bouquet stays fresh and beautiful.
5 Flower Food Flower food is a product sold with flowers, claiming to make them last longer. However, we don't use or recommend it since it's a chemical-based product often packaged in plastic. Once flowers are placed in flower food, they will need it with every water change. We believe in keeping things simple - nothing beats fresh water!
6 Hot WeatherBrisbane summers are intense, with temperatures soaring up to 45 degrees Celsius - tough for both people and flowers! It's best to keep your flowers in air conditioning, but if that's not an option, you can try placing the stems, stripped of leaves, in a deep vase with cool water. To reduce bacteria during summer, add a small dash of bleach or an aspirin to the water.
